1. The image you use must be a 24-bit bmp file.
2. The higher the resolution the better
3. Generally you don't want to use the overlay on the base surface, because you have less control over the distribution of it.
4. Under the advanced distribution of the surface layer, a good place to start is with the fractal noise at the minimum level, and the coverage at the maximum level, and then play around with them to get the amount of coverage you desire.
5. In the "Image Overlay Options" make sure the terrain size is set to the size of the terrain you are working with.
6. Tiling is how many times the image file you are using will be repeated in either direction. In general the higher the number the better, depending on the image I'm using I'll use anywhere between 100 and 300. Again, this is just a place to start.
7. As far as overlay type, I haven't played with any other than the Total Overlay.
